May is Mental Health Awareness Month. A special group of women, all members of the Harbor Hills Ladies and Garden Club, are doing their part. They support OASIS, a Leesburg facility that provides therapeutic treatment to fourteen adult residents.
A division of LifeStream social services, OASIS is a long term residential community. It is designed to provide an alternative to state hospitalization. Previously called GRTS (Geriatric Residential Treatment System), the facility now houses middle age as well as elderly patients.
The relationship with OASIS and Harbor Hills began many years ago with neighbor Marge Clark. With Marge’s encouragement, the Harbor Hills Garden Club became an active supporter of the treatment facility.
Elba Burns is one of the Harbor Hills group of ‘regular’ visitors to OASIS. She, along with Pat Canciello, Marge Waterstreet, Judie Thomson and others visit the facility monthly. When asked why the ladies make time to help, Elba says, “It’s an opportunity to make someone else happy. They seldom get out. It’s our way of helping.”
Friday, May 6 was an exceptional day for OASIS residents. Arriving in their special van, fourteen residents excitedly joined Garden Club members at the clubhouse for lunch. Entertainment included playing games for small prizes, mostly living necessities such as shampoo, nail polish, batteries and more. A ukulele medley of songs provided a lot of fun for everyone.
Linda DeTommaso is the Coordinator of Services for OASIS. She and her staff members are appreciative of the time and talent that Harbor Hills volunteers have shared with the residents. The clients look forward to their visits. According to one staff member, “The OASIS residents are lucky to have such incredible women reach out to help them enjoy their lives.”

Natalie Wood was only eight years old when she played the role of Susan in the 1947 holiday favorite ‘Miracle on 34thStreet.’ Her famous line, ‘I believe…I believe…’ is more relevant now than ever. We must believe in the spirit of the holiday and not lose sight of all that is beautiful and right with the world.
With that spirit of wonder in mind, the Harbor Hills Garden and Women’s Club celebrated with their ‘Holiday Home Show’ on Friday, December 11. Five residents opened their beautifully-adorned homes for the holiday tour.
Garland, tinsel and candy canes set the scene for Club President Sue Rice’s favorite collections. Her fondness for teddy bears was inspired by her mother’s mink stole! Three of Sue’s many bears were created out of the stole, a fashion icon of the fifties. Mary Phelan’s outdoor display is an eye-popping light show on her corner property. Once inside, every room reminds us of the holiday, starting with the fifteen foot tree in her living room. Mary’s extensive nutcracker collection hails from her time living in Germany.
Becky Hanner, Debbie Ayre and Linda Fulkrod also opened their doors displaying different themes in each of their beautifully decorated homes. Outdoor patios and lanais were adorned with wreaths, candles and glittering garlands.
Brightly colored trees welcomed us as Becky showcased her Christmas Village. Debbie displayed her special Santa collection. Linda’s unique nativity scenes included an enchanting set handcrafted in Poland. What a wonderful way to share the joy of the season with our Harbor Hills friends and neighbors!
Many thanks to these inspiring women who opened up their homes and hearts to share the spirit of the season. In the words of Kris Kringle, Macy’s favorite Santa, ‘Christmas isn’t just a day, it’s a frame of mind.’ Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
