COL. JOHN BIRCHER, FLORIDA VETERANS’ HALL OF FAME BY NIKKI HOFFMAN

The Florida Veterans’ Hall of Fame was established in 2013 and is headquartered in the Capitol building in Tallahassee. Its purpose is to recognize and honor military veterans who have significantly contributed to the State of Florida through their work and lives during and after military service.

I am honored to share that my friend and neighbor, John Bircher, has been inducted into the Florida Veterans’ Hall of Fame by Governor DeSantis on November 14, 2023.

The almost thirty-year military career of retired Army Colonel John E. Bircher III included intelligence officer and Middle East foreign area specialist assignments. John served in Vietnam with Special Forces and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for Valor.

In 2006, John organized and established a chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) in Lake County and served as the chapter’s first commander. Under his leadership, he organized charity golf tournaments, food and clothing drives, and fundraising efforts to assist the American Red Cross in helping Florida veterans affected by hurricanes. He also introduced MORPH to “Wreaths Across America” and participated in ceremonies at Bushnell Cemetery.

Most notable is the Public Relations program John created for the national MOPH organization. During his twelve-year tenure as Director, he raised awareness of the history of the Purple Heart medal and the sacrifices of its recipients. His expansion of the program led to the Public Relations Society of America's recognition of his achievements, which celebrates the best strategic campaigns of the year as well as outstanding organizational excellence.

In 1988, John was awarded the Defense Superior Service medal for his unique capabilities, serving as a senior advisor to the Assistant Secretary of State for Middle East and South Asian affairs, where he established himself as one of the nation's leading experts on Middle East Politico-Military affairs.

After John’s military retirement, he worked tirelessly on behalf of Florida’s veterans and their families. His stellar achievements continue to this day. Please join me in congratulating John on his significant contributions to our state and country.
