Oasis is a long-term residential community

Calling all residents of Harbor Hills Country Club! Looking for a way to share the giving spirit of the upcoming holiday season?

A special group of women, all members of the Harbor Hills Garden and Women’s Club have the answer. They support Oasis, a Leesburg residential facility that provides therapeutic treatment to fifteen mentally challenged, functional adults.

A division of LifeStream Behavioral Center, Oasis is a long-term residential community. Programs concentrate on group treatment and teaching daily living skills in a supervised environment. Previously called the Geriatric Residential Treatment System (GRTS), the facility houses middle-age patients with a variety of mental and medical challenges.

The Harbor Hills Garden and Women’s Club is an active supporter of the local treatment facility. Elba Burns, a sixteen year Oasis volunteer, is one of Harbor Hills’ group of regular visitors to the facility. She, along with Henrietta Lubin, Sun Brooks, Judie Thomson, Francie Zimmerman and others visit monthly. It’s always a party with ice cream socials, Bingo and the residents’ favorite – the corn hole game!

With the holiday season fast approaching, all residents of Harbor Hills are encouraged to gather a few friends and fill a client’s wish list together. Items include personal hygiene articles, clothing and puzzles. These gift bags need to be turned in to Elba by December 6. Harbor Hills volunteers will host this year’s Christmas party for Oasis residents on December 19. In exchange, the clients have already started practicing their Christmas carols to sing for the volunteers.

“Many residents are without family,” Elba explains, ”and our visits take on a special meaning. Their happiness fills our hearts.”  This outreach program is open to all Harbor Hills residents. To find out more, call Elba Burns at 352-259-9167.
