TUNNEL TO TOWERS FOUNDATION – CENTRAL FLORIDA GOLF CLASSIC BY NIKKI HOFFMAN
Each of us knows exactly where we were on September 11, 2001. The Twin Towers at the World Trade Center collapsed into smoke and rubble in the mid-morning hours, shocking and confusing Americans and people around the world. An off-duty New York City firefighter, Stephen Siller, was headed to meet his brothers for a round of golf. Upon hearing the radio reports, he turned his truck around and grabbed his gear from the firehouse. The Brooklyn Battery Tunnel was closed to vehicles for security reasons. Thinking quickly, Siller donned his gear and literally ran through the tunnel to the Twin Towers to meet members of Squad 1 and provide aid.
Siller’s older brother, Frank, recalls the moment he learned that his brother Stephen was among the missing. His family was devastated. To honor Stephen’s sacrifice, Frank established a foundation named after Stephen's route: Tunnel to Towers.
