MAKE THOSE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS STICK BY NIKKI HOFFMAN

What is the secret to sticking to our New Year’s resolutions? According to the latest research, February 1 is the day we call it quits! Despite the prevailing “New Year-New Me” mentality, one in seven Americans never truly believes they’ll adhere to their resolutions.

Most meaningful change happens slowly, one day at a time. Author Tanya Richardson suggests that when goals are infused with self-love, they become easier to accomplish. Build in some healthy rewards, such as a small treat or an at-home spa day.

Fitness is an integral part of prolonging and enjoying life. It’s always high on the list of New Year's resolutions. Harbor Hills neighbor Regi Chapin leads a Low-Impact Aerobics class Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in the Harbor Room. Club members can join the group for a fun exercise that reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, and improves strength.

Regi also teaches line dancing classes on Tuesdays. Beginners dance from 3 to 4 PM, followed by an advanced class that teaches more intricate moves. For information, email Regi at regchape@gmail.com.

To strike a balance between our fitness goals and realistic expectations for seniors, orthopedic specialist Dr. Claudia Thomas provides insight. “Fitness is a key factor in minimizing common symptoms such as lower back pain, shoulder pain, and knee pain,” she said. “Harbor Hills is unique. Our gentle hills offer walkers the perfect fitness opportunity.”

Give yourself room to fall short. Small goals are the building blocks of our fitness journey. Achieving them will keep us encouraged and optimistic about our progress.
