GOLF TOURNAMENT SUPPORTS LOCAL CHARITIES BY NIKKI HOFFMAN
“Never Stop Serving.”That is the motto of the Military Officers Association of America, boasting more than 350,000 members from every branch of service. This nonprofit organization supports policies that benefit military members and their families. Veteran support services include families and caregivers. Local youth are encouraged to lead a life of service via Junior ROTC, scholarship programs and ongoing recognition.The MOAA chapter of Lake and Sumter Counties includes members from The Villages and Lake, Sumter and Marion counties. Monthly meetings are January -November at Eisenhower Recreational Complex.Don Hansen is the chapter president and event chairman for the 14th Military Charities Golf Tournament at Harbor Hills. His twenty-two plus years as an Army lawyer and over twenty-one years as a federal prosecutor in the Middle District of Florida qualify him to promote the goals of the MOAA. Don’s commitment to serve has taken him from his Nebraska home to live in Germany, Korea, Virginia, Maryland, Texas, California and Tampa, Florida to retirement in The Villages and active participation in his local MOAA chapter.The tournament is scheduled for Friday, April 8th at Harbor Hills Country Club. The tournament format is a step-aside scramble with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The $90 donation per golfer includes golf, a silent auction, dinner and awards. Last day for signing up foursomes will be Monday, April 4th and singles Tuesday, April 5th.Funds and sponsors are greatly needed to provide $500 and $1,000 scholarships to local schools and support local military charities.
