THE BLUEBIRDS THRIVE IN HARBOR HILLS BY NIKKI HOFFMAN
Harbor Hills Country Club is situated at the highest elevation level in North Central Florida. It is adjacent to Lake Griffin, a 9,200-acre lake. With golf, boating, tennis and walking paths, there is something interesting and fun for everyone.Follow the footpaths and you will notice nest boxes perched several feet above the ground. Thirty boxes are scattered throughout our community. With the developer’s approval, neighbors Jim Griffith and Bill Stone built these habitats for the bluebirds who have found a welcoming home. From mid-February through mid-July, the bluebirds lay about five light blue eggs to a nest. In two weeks, the eggs hatch. The fledglings leave the nest 15-20 days later. We estimate that 150 bluebird babies are added to our community annually. One of our premier men’s golf association tournaments is the Member/Member Team Match Play. The first flight winners were John Clarke and Gary Cronin. Second-flight winners were Chris Delzio and Ted Sartin. They won in an exciting playoff against Keith Hale and Bill James. The third flight winners were Don Winefordner and Bruce Goldsborough. The fourth flight winners were Mike Collier and Bob Kasse. The Harbor Hills Ladies Swingin’ 9’ers played their club championship. The overall low gross winner was Leslie Nisun. Flight A low gross winner was Carol Bowers. Flight A low net winner was Carol Langan. Flight B low gross winner was Lorraine Kasse.
