TOPLESS CLUB TAKES TO THE ROAD BY NIKKI HOFFMAN

Convertible cars have always been synonymous with a carefree lifestyle. Wasn’t “Born To Run” written by Bruce Springsteen in a ’57 Chevy Bel Air convertible? And remember the Ford Thunderbird ragtop driven off the cliff by Thelma and Louise? Who doesn’t recall the Porsche that James Dean last drove in 1955 – a 550 Spyder convertible? Not surprisingly, Florida and California lead the nation in convertible car sales, with a total of 23 percent combined.Motivated to take to the road? Convertible car owners are invited to join a very special club. Jokingly referred to as the Topless Club, the Convertible Club at Harbor Hills Country Club has over 100 active members. Once a month, the members cruise the back roads of Central Florida to find interesting places off the beaten path. Not surprisingly, there is much to be appreciated by finding those   hidden gems in our own backyard.This season’s trips included a cruise to Lilly’s on Lake Minneola, a visit to the Dragon Flower Winery in Summerfield, a tailgate party to the polo grounds and a drive to Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park and the Marguerita Grill. Dancing, mingling, wine tasting and great food is a big part of the fun.The club’s season runs from October through May. Members alternate as hosts for each monthly outing. The club has no meetings, no officers and no dues! Your car must be a true convertible and sunroofs don’t count! All residents of Harbor Hills Country Club are welcome to join.
