THE JEWEL OF LAKE COUNTY BY NIKKI HOFFMAN

THE JEWEL OF LAKE COUNTY

On Mother’s Day, we honor the essential role of mothers, stepmothers, and grandmothers in our lives. Whether you're nurturing children, grandchildren, or a beloved pet, your love and dedication do not go unnoticed. To all the inspirational women who shape our lives, we celebrate you today and every day.

As Floridians, we are keenly aware of the fragility of the environment that sustains us. May is American Wetlands Month, the perfect time to recognize the importance of the preservation of our nearby Florida Everglades. The Everglades is the largest tropical wilderness of any kind in the United States. It is home to countless animal and plant species, including many that are endangered. The Everglades provide critical services such as water filtration and flood control. Recreation and tourism rely heavily on activities there such as fishing, birdwatching, and kayaking. More than 360,000 acres are protected by The Nature Conservancy and its partners.

Central Florida plays an important role in the Greater Everglades area, and much has been done to preserve our local area as well. Adjacent to the shores of Lake Griffin, the Emeralda Marsh Conservation Area is an aspect of Harbor Hills living that residents cherish. Called the Jewel of Lake County, the area borders Lake Griffin and is home to a wide variety of plants and animal life, including rare birds.

Harbor Hills is one of the few boating communities in Central Florida. Our private marina provides access through the chain of lakes to the St. Johns River and up to the Atlantic Ocean in Jacksonville. Recreational cruising is encouraged. Visit the St. Johns River Water Management District website at https://www.sjrwmd.com for more information.
